Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of catholic doctrine, illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s Magisterium. The Catechism originated from a recommendation made at an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 1985 that a compendium of all Catholic doctrine regarding faith and morals be composed. Then in 1986 Pope John Paul II appointed a commission of Cardinals and Bishops to develop a comprehensive text of Catholic doctrine. On December 8, 1992 Pope John Paul II promulgated the Catechism with an apostolic constitution.

Why study the Catechism of the Catholic Church?

“Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts, and always have an answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that is in you.” (1 Peter 3:15)

CCC Paragraph 426: “At the heart of catechesis we find, in essence, a Person, the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, the only Son from the Father. . .who suffered and died for us and who now, after rising, is living with us forever.”

Organized around the four pillars of the Catechism—Creed, Sacraments, Christian Life, and Prayer—this study helps participants:

  • profess their faith
  • worship meaningfully
  • live morally and justly
  • develop a life of prayer
How would I benefit from the Study?

Living as a Catholic in the modern world requires reading the bible, praying and knowing the faith. All three elements are needed. For many people the knowledge of the faith is the weakest element. The study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church helps the individual to grow in understanding of the faith, live the faith in confidence and to share the faith among those they meet. Above all it helps to develop a personal relationship with God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Through personal reflections, sound reasoning, and real-world examples, participants are invited not only to understand the faith—but to live it.

Under the guidance and blessings of then Vicar Fr. Roy Mollechalil, the CCC Study in our parish began on February 22, 2023. All are welcome to join the Study Group.

How is the Catechism structured?

The Catechism is divided into 4 parts:

  • Part 1: The Profession of Faith – The Creed.
  • Part 2: The Celebration of the Christian Mystery – The Sacraments.
  • Part 3: Life in Christ – The dignity of the Human Person and the Commandments.
  • Part 4: Christian Prayer – The Lord’s Prayer.
